Lizzie St. John Eckel

An Extraordinary Career

American Lizzie St. John Eckel (1838-) played both sides in the Civil War, supped at the tables of the French aristocracy, converted to Catholicism, built a chapel in Sharon, Connecticut, and the last that was heard of her was selling holy balm to Americans from Paris in 1893.

Her story starts with her Canadian mother, Maria Monk (1816-49), who Lizzie thought was more sinned against than sinning. Contemporary research suggests that abusive relationships, particularly if the abuse is sustained and multi-faceted, can be repeated down the generations.

Was this the case for Maria and Lizzie?
