Hesitant Histories

Welcome!

The traces of past lives are much like Brighton pier - skeletons of an inaccessible richer past. On this site you will find articles, images and video material about people, mostly from the nineteenth century, who happen to interest me. They have to have been prominent enough for there to be records that can be mined. Most of them were, or have since been, dismissed because of a perceived offence against individuals, institutions or values. Some have intended to hide or to mislead. Maybe they are worth reconsidering...

The person whose life triggered my interest was a Victorian woman who is still subject to hostile reports. You can find out more about her on A Forgotten Battle - Mary Caroline Michell.
